Instead of spending money on pre-made taco seasoning, at My Happy Plates we swear by DIY taco seasoning. Since the spices aren’t pre-mixed, they can be used individually in all types of dishes, not only tacos! Also, packaged seasoning mixes often contain unnatural ingredients like hydrogenated soybean oil, silicon dioxide, and “natural flavor.” If you really want to know what you’re putting in your food, then making taco season at home is your best bet.
One of our favorite recipes for homemade taco seasoning is this one from the Whole30 meal plan:
- 2 Tbsp. chili powder
- 2 tsp. ground cumin
- 1 ½ tsp. garlic powder
- ½ tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. dried oregano
- ¼ tsp. paprika
- 1 tsp. sea salt
- ¼-½ tsp. cayenne pepper
Just mix the ingredients in a jar and you have your fresh taco seasoning ready for you!
*Feel free to omit any ingredients you don’t like. With homemade taco seasoning, you have the freedom to control the spice level by adjusting the amount of cayenne pepper or chili powder. Personally, I am not a huge fan of garlic, so I leave out the garlic powder when I make my seasoning.
